Uninspired by existing options, designer Kate Weinberg took things into her own hands with her Olympic-inspired collection on social media. Her now-viral series resonated with millions, including Olympic athletes and major brands.
With the Olympics officially over, we’re still thinking about the inspiring stories and athletes that we were cheering on. Graphic Designer Kate Weinberg wanted to support her favourite teams in the form of custom merch, only to find the range uninspiring and generic. Taking matters into her own hands, Kate took to social media to design her own line of Olympic-inspired merch. Her now viral series resonated with millions of people, including multiple Olympic athletes and major brands.
"My social media feed was filled with Olympians in the Olympic Village showing off their cool gear, but I couldn’t help but wonder—what about the fans? Surely there must be plenty of options, right? But the official Olympic merch felt generic, and if you were looking for something sport-specific, the choices were minimal. As a designer, I decided to create my own merch that truly represents the visual vibrancy of each sport." - Kate Weinberg
Determined to showcase the true spirit of the Olympics, Kate decided to create a series of merch designs, each focused on a different Olympic sport. Each design took about eight hours from start to finish, including recording, editing, and posting the videos on Instagram where she had her audience - Olympians included - voting and commenting on which sport she should design next.
"I started this project to make people feel seen and celebrated in their sport," Kate shared.
Initially, Kate’s goal was to gain recognition from the Olympics themselves, but as the timeline grew tight, she decided to launch her own merch brand. Even though production delays prevented the range from being released in time for this year’s Olympics, her designs still resonated with millions, and will be available on her website.
As she told ESPN, "There is SO MUCH more potential here! This is why I’m starting this series—to explore what Olympic merch could look like and hopefully spark change for the future."
Although the Olympics and Paralympics 2024 are coming to an end, we look forward to what she will make for Winter Olympics 2025!
